CAT & Genny

19 March 2026

When it comes to excavation and groundworks, one of the biggest risks on site is striking underground services. Hidden below the surface could be electrical cables, gas pipes, water mains, or telecommunications lines- all of which pose serious safety hazards if damaged.

That’s where CAT & Genny training plays a critical role.

What is CAT & Genny?

A Cable Avoidance Tool (CAT) and Signal Generator (Genny) are used together to detect and locate underground utilities before any digging begins.

  • CAT (Cable Avoidance Tool): Detects electromagnetic signals emitted by underground services
  • Genny (Signal Generator): Applies a signal to pipes or cables, making them easier to trace

Used correctly, this equipment allows operatives to map out what lies beneath the surface- significantly reducing the risk of accidental strikes.

Why is CAT & Genny Training Important?

Striking underground services can have serious consequences, including:

  • Severe injury or fatality (especially with electrical or gas lines)
  • Costly project delays
  • Expensive repairs and legal implications
  • Disruption to local infrastructure and communities

Proper training ensures that workers not only know how to use the equipment, but also understand safe systems of work and industry best practices.

Who Needs This Training?

CAT & Genny training is essential for anyone involved in excavation or groundwork activities, including:

  • Construction operatives
  • Groundworkers
  • Utility workers
  • Civil engineering teams
  • Site supervisors and managers

Whether experienced or new to the industry, this training provides vital knowledge that helps keep everyone on site safe.

What Does the Course Cover?

A typical CAT & Genny course will include both theory and practical elements, such as:

  • Understanding different types of underground services
  • Safe use of CAT & Genny equipment
  • Techniques for locating and tracing services
  • Interpreting signals and avoiding common errors
  • Practical exercises simulating real site conditions
  • Health & safety responsibilities and legislation

By the end of the course, delegates should feel confident in carrying out surveys prior to excavation work.

The Benefits of CAT & Genny Training

Investing in this training delivers real value for both individuals and organisations:

  • Improved site safety
  • Reduced risk of service strikes
  • Increased confidence for operatives
  • Compliance with health & safety standards
  • Cost savings by avoiding damage and delays
