The aim of this course is to provide operators with the knowledge and practical skills needed to safely operate a Refuse Collection Vehicle. This course includes theory and practical elements, with tests being conducted on each.
By the end of the course, operators should be able to:
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of the industry and their roles and responsibilities as an operator
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook
- Locate and identify the major components and controls of the crane and explain their functions
- Explain how weights and centres of gravity are identified
- Use the correct access/egress procedures and explain the emergency egress procedures (cab types)
- Conduct all pre-operation checks
- Check all relevant warning systems, emergency stop function and motion limiters
- Set up an exclusion zone
- Configure and set the crane for lifting and transferring duties
- Travel using the full working range of the beam and trolley, with and without loads
- Lift and move various loads, using the full lateral and longitudinal travel at various heights
- Minimise uncontrolled movement of the load
- Place loads safely and accurately, including in locations out of sight
- Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures.
